The Politiek Café Foundation is proud to announce the first International Political Café about Cultural Diversity in the United States at the Carlton Ambassador Hotel in The Hague. The speakers will take place in a panel consisting of  Pete Ito, Deputy US Delegation to the OPCW, Jay Heung, Economic Officer US Embassy and Ms. Marion Ekpuk, Press Attaché, US Embassy.
 
The International Political Café is held once a month at the Carlton Ambassador Hotel, Sophialaan 2 in The Hague. The doors open at 7.45pm and at 8.15pm there will be an introduction of 15 minutes by the speaker on a given subject followed by 45 minutes of discussion. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to continue the discussion more informally over a drink.

About the speakers:
 
Mr. Pete K. Ito
 
Mr. Pete K. Ito is the Deputy of the U.S. Delegation to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Mr. Ito has been in his current position since 2003. He began his Foreign Service career in 1982, and has served as a consular officer in Seoul and then as a consular and political officer in Copenhagen. He was a staff assistant for the Assistant Secretary for Political-Military Affairs and then handled Northeast Asian security policy issues in the PM Bureau. He worked on the German desk, serving as the last desk officer responsible for the German Democratic Republic. He was subsequently a political-military affairs officer in Bonn and then an analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Mr. Ito returned to Copenhagen, working as the political-military affairs officer and then as the Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs. He then headed the political-military affairs section in Berlin before moving to The Hague to assume his current duties. Mr. Ito was born in Lodi, California. He received a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley (1978) and a law degree (1981) and a Masters in International Affairs (1982) from George Washington University. He is married to the former Riana Booyens.

Hoe ongerijmd het ook klinkt, de morele druk waaronder D66 gebukt gaat vormt tevens de basis van haar gelijk. Wat dat betreft, mag er allereerst geen misverstand over bestaan dat de Democraten zich niet keren tegen het (morele) doel van de missie: de ombouw van Afghanistan tot een fatsoenlijk land, waarin het geweld is uitgebannen en de mensenrechten worden gerespecteerd. Daarnaast is het ook duidelijk dat hun standpunt mede wordt bepaald door het gevaar dat de Nederlandse militairen in Uruzgan lopen. Van angsthazerij kan D66 echter niet beticht worden. Van redelijkheid echter wel, hoe moeilijk dat ook te accepteren is voor de voorstanders van de missie. Deze zullen namelijk ruiterlijk moeten erkennen, dat slachtoffers op geen enkele manier te verkopen zijn, in het licht van het doel van de vredesmissie.
