In many European countries, the development of a national cultural canon is a topical subject of debate. But how does this fit into the larger context?

And what is the role of culture in forming the political ideas of the member states of the European Union? Could the concept of a European Cultural Canon be useful here? Certainly, since the expansion of the EU and with the ever-growing economic impact of this collaboration and the Dutch and French NO, the question of what really holds us together has become increasingly important. This conference aims to provide better insight into this specific area of one of the unifying elements in European culture: the idea of a Cultural Canon.

The programme of this meeting exists of presentations and workshops.

With presentations of Bart van Rosmalen (Walter Maas Huis), Simon Mundy (poet, festival director, broadcaster and advisor cultural policy), Justine van Lawick (psychologist), Leonidas Donskis (philosopher, Lithuania) and Peter Duelund (University of Copenhagen).

The programme is enriched by workshops about history, literature, music and film. The workshops are moderated by Silvia Terribili (Istituto Italiano di Cultura per i Paesi Bassi), Cas Smithuysen (Boekman Foundation), Herman Beliën (University of Amsterdam) and Margot Dijkgraaf (Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad).

During the workshops several presentations are given:
History workshop: Michael Werner (advisor on French and German history) and Han van der Horst (historian, NUFFIC);
Literature workshop: Gabriela Sittová (Cermat, Commission, Czech Republic) and Leonoor Broeder (NLPVF);
Music workshop: Jan Nuchelmans (musicologist) and Eveline Nikkels (Mozart and Mahler Foundation);
Film workshop: Johan Thielemans (publicist) and Jan Simons (filmspecialist, UvA).

The programme is subject to change.

This conference is part of Dare2Connect, a programme of Felix Meritis and Stichting Internationale Culturele Activiteiten/SICA, and is organized in collaboration with EUNIC, the European National Institutions of Culture, The Netherlands.
